Hemorrhoids are veins in the rectum that have become inflamed and prolapsed. Hemorrhoids originate from a group of veins present in the rectum known as the hemorrhoidal plexus. Hence the name Hemorrhoids. There are two set of veins: internal veins and external veins.
There are also two types of hemorrhoids and they are classified according to there location. When the internal veins are the problem then they are called internal hemorrhoids . They are called external hemorrhoids when the external veins are affected.
The symptoms may be slightly different for the two types of hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are usually silent. They usually tend to bleed mainly.
People with internal hemorrhoids are usually asymptomatic ( have no symptoms). But they may be frightened when they see blood in the toilet after a bowel movement. Sometimes large amounts of bright red blood may be seen but sometimes just a streak of blood on the stool is seen.
Warning: This can also be a cancer sign, so please consult your medical doctor for a complete examination.
Signs and Symptoms present mostly in the external form of hemorrhoids are:
- Bleeding after bowel movement or noticed while wiping the anal area
- Pain and swelling to the point where it can make walking difficult
- Itching and irritation around the anal area
- Hemorrhoids protruding from your anus
- A Sensitive and painful lump near your anus
- Fecal Leakage
What Causes Hemorrhoids?
Life-style factors are usually the cause in the development of hemorrhoids. Some of these are:
1. Low amounts of fiber in the diet
2. Straining during a bowel movement
3. Obesity
4. Constipation
5. Lack of Exercise
But the thing is, you can prevent and improve hemorrhoids by modifying these life-style factors but many times you cannot correct them completely after they have developed. These measures are necessary to prevent hemorrhoids and improve them but will not cure them completely. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids you need to modify these factors but you also need extra help to get rid of hemorrhoids completely.
Treatments vary in conventional medicine and also in the alternative medical field. A Diversity of Creams, suppositories and ointments exists for treating hemorrhoids. Understand that these only will help in relieving symptoms. They do not give complete relief from hemorrhoids!
Surgery is one method that is used to correct hemorrhoids but two things may happen. One that is very litle known is that even after surgery these Hemorrhoids can COME BACK!! And number two is that you have to have a good insurance plan since the procedure is very expensive.
