In the absence of insulin glucose cannot enter the cells in your body which is used to produce energy and continues to remain in your blood. This instigate your blood sugar to upswing. When body is not able to produce insulin or is not able to properly use the insulin that has been produced results in the increased sugar level in the blood. This condition is known as diabetes.
The main reason of gestational diabetes is hormonal changes which occurs during pregnancy. At this period of time certain hormones that are created in the placents limit the insulin from regulating the glucose level in the body creating a disorder that is know as insulin resistance. The placenta is the organ connecting the baby to the uterus by the umbilical chord which is the main source of nutrients that baby gets from mother. As time progresses the placenta grows larger and produces higher levels of hormones which in turn increase insulin resistance.
There is approx three times the normal amount of insulin is produced by the mother’s pancreas in order to overcome insulin resistance. When sufficient amount of insulin is not produced for overcoming the effect created by increased hormone levels it results in high blood glucose and gestational diabetes.
There should be proper treatment for high levels of blood glucose during pregnancy. Or else it can create problems both for the child and the mother as well. Although gestational diabetes does not cause the baby to have diabetes but if not treated properly then there is a chance that the baby may produce more insulin and gain more weight.
